Cold foil is used in various printing processes and mainly in flexography, in the production of labels and tags.
It is the application of a metallized film on the printed material or directly on the substrate. This application is done cold, using an adhesive, as opposed to the hot-stamping process, in which the application is done hot.
There is a growing trend in the use of cold foil in self-adhesive labels, thanks to technological advances in the application and production of the film, we managed to bring the cost close to that of hot-stamping. Until a few years ago, cold foil was always applied at the end of the label printing process, providing metallic details in gold and silver, today it is widely used at the beginning of printing, applying cold in flat areas and then, in overprintable process, it is printed with UV flexo ink, enabling infinite shades of metallic colors.
